Been a -relatively- quiet Sunday in many respects. The Dooney is doing well, and making up for the lost chow time for the past two to three days. His toofuses were bothering him quite a bit, and it put him off his grub.

So it seems he’s making up for lost time today with a bottle/snacks/teether cookies almost every three hours.

The kid can, when he sets his mind to it, suck down the groceries with no regard to my wallet I swear… If y’all see any sales on a horizontal deep freeze, let me know in the comments.

Buying 1/2 a cow is looking like it’s going from “possible” to “probable” here, what with beef being expected to shoot through the roof in the next 6 months from it’s ALREADY retarded fucking high prices… Better to buy now and be happy than to be looking later down the road at extortion level pricing…

Now, granted normally due to my overseas experience, I’d say to Hell with this Frog. Generally my disdain for all things French preclude me from wanting to have anything to do with a Frog… However, his honesty, and his Euro-Outlook from the French Perspective of the Culture here in the US is awesome.

  11. She’s starting to hit that abuelita wall. Those chicks do not age well.

    Got 1/2 beef last year. Just me and the wife, still working on it. Make sure you get all the organ meat. Especially the beef cheeks. Tongue is dang good eating as long as you prepare it right – think of a very tender, very lean rump roast.

    Have Cowboy help you out with your cut sheet – the possibilities are endless when you start filling it out, only to realize maybe you should have bought the whole beef. Make you get a freezer bigger than what you think you need. Glad I had two freezers, because the one overflowed into the other.

    1. The place I bought my freezer offered an insurance policy that covers the contents in the event the freezer breaks down. That right there is a little peace of mind. I also had an electrician put in a new breaker and electrical outlet just for the freezer, so it is on its own circuit. I also keep a thermometer inside where I can glance at the temp every time I open it up – just to make sure.

      Don’t let it sit empty while waiting to fill it. Put several jugs of water in to keep it from cycling on and off trying to keep cold until you replace them with the meat.

      Like said below: Freezer becomes priority one for the Genny when power goes out. Only need to run it for a few hours a day, though.

  12. Just a thought on the freezer, get two smaller ones that have a combined volume larger than a single. As you eat the side down load all whats left into one freezer. Also easier to locate in the casa and garage. Go chest version, cold doesn’t fall on the floor when you open the door. One more thing, emergency gen set for the freezers and fridge. Running half time will keep food frozen in a chest fridge. Extend fuel run time. Also smaller gen needed, just enough to trip compressor capacitor. Survival is energy management.

  13. Half an Angus steer is running me between $2k-2400 at a farmer in Madisonville, TN I’ve used a few years. Great beef, but, yeah, ain’t cheap (net about ~200lbs meat into the freezer, depending on the cow/cuts). Reckon it won’t get any cheaper, either. He was 4-months out when I booked. Said demand is through the roof. Takes 18-24 months to make one ready for harvest, herd’s don’t grow overnight, either.

    1. Wut? I don’t speak for the proprietor, but this place is more “on the rails” now than it has been anytime since I started reading here years ago. We used to get regular reports of outrageous family drama/legal troubles, how to tutorials on building flame throwers, and BCE’s amusing “hot takes” on whatever the major political bullshit of the day was.

      Now, he mostly writes about raising a kid, and some gunsmithing. I dare say his content has become pretty ordinary, compared to stuff he posted in the past. And the recent comments I see are also on the tame side of discourse, when I consider the stuff that was posted here (even by myself, no less) as recently as within the past year or so.

      I kind of miss the bad old days, there’s no doubt it made for more entertaining reading. But it’s good that BCE has found a bit of peace and quiet (well, relatively speaking) at long last.
