The Finished FrankenMauser (Still needs Headspacing and Testing)

Greetings and Salutations!
Well, call me a ‘convert’ on Brownells Aluma-Hyde II. I like the way the stuff works overall. A few gripes, but the outcome was really above what I had expected. After putting up the last post, I figured out how I could do the barrel and receiver. I took the long flower-tub I had used to soak the Lee Enfield in the rust cleaner (which had been drained) and then took a cleaning rod to use to suspend the whole thing over the tub so as to catch the overspray.

Then I had to let everything sit for 24-48 hours.
THAT is something I’m not good at. Waiting that is.

So, once I felt I could, I took out the sight bar and removed the tape:

Oh yeah… that came out nicely.
Then I mounted the slider:

I then put the hardware on to the stock, namely the butt plate:

OK, that looks great, and yes, the finish is silky-smooth.
Then it was inspection time of the barrel and receiver as well as the trigger group. I left the trigger group in place as at some point, the pin holding it all together got ‘mushroomed’ a wee too much for easy removal. Since it wasn’t in bad shape at all, and I really didn’t want to drill it out of mess with it, it remained in-situ.

So far, so good.

As I stated, it cause no issue when I did it this way:

“Looking Good Billy-Ray!”

“Feeling Good Louis!”

Indeed.
The final product:

And then the top-down view, including the action:

And then the flip side:

And lastly, from underneath:

So that’s a wrap on that except for the headspacing.
I’m still waiting on the gauges to get here.
Last I checked, they were in Atlanta?
Nope… now in Ybor… so figure Saturday maybe? Then I get them for 3 days, and have to send them back. Theoretically, the second bolt is going to be here tomorrow. I’ll believe it when I see it. If it gets here in the same timeframe, and I can test BOTH bolts out? That’ll work nicely.

So no politics tonight

And I’m not touching the DC Collision until we get some real answers. The only thing I’ll mention is the Aviators who fly for that unit? They’re among the best as they’re responsible for flying the Fat Fuck Perfumed Princes around… so you know the Gen’ruls and Admi-mules aren’t going to chance flying with low-hour Intrepid Birdmen.
Sooooo WTF happened?
Good Question.

So how do you think it came out?

  1. The question I have to ask. Who, on the aircraft or helicopter, did the Deep State need dead? Or it just could be an acciDEInt.

  2. Bravo! Looks great.
Air traffic controller dropped the ball and didn’t tell the helo guys in what direction the flight they had to watch out for was. They had eyes on a flight in landing pattern in front and stated they saw the aircraft.
Then they got T boned by the airliner from the right. The tower was shorthanded and it might have been a DEI hire to boot.
I know that they have been flying with the transponders off for years but I question if that is a good idea in that airspace.
    Insanely busy.

    1. Numrich. ‘Sling, 1-1/4″, Brown Leather, Original Surplus – Used, Very Good Condition, $19.99’ Period Correct Real M1916 Leather sling. Had to clean up the brass corrosion on it, and look up HOW to sling it properly, but got it done. Might be a Swede Sling…

  3. Two bolts, eh? Tiny – would it be worth chopping the bolt handle and doing some cosmetic work on one? Sure – ya want everything period correct and as authentic as possible… but that has to be one of the fugliest bolt actions I’ve ever seen! 😂

What kind of ammo will you start out with?

    1. Yeah Yeah… GAFY Filthie. That’s the cleanest Mauser Action that you’ve ever seen. Hell, it’s the cleanest ANYONE has seen for a bolt made in 1899
The ammo on hand is 7x75mm Sellior and Bellot 140gn FMJ. Basic pure-dee plinking rounds (if there was such a thing for this)
At $15 for a box, I figured that it’s good ‘enuff for a trial run, which if I’m lucky I’ll have done on Sunday, providing I get it gauged by then.

  4. This is just an observation, are you left eyed? Stock cast and sling anchor point lead me to ask that question. On the crash, I used to fly into DCA on CRJ700’s out of Detroit. Its a very strange approach pattern going up and coming down the river to align with the kinda short runway. Pretty daughter spent the covid years in DC working patent law for white shoe firms. Was there regularly and the air traffic is insane. Other than that its a nice little airport. What are you rehabbing next? If you don’t have one lined up, maybe you can take on a job from one of the trusted readers.

    1. Always looking for another project. Just DM me.
I have 2x Lee Enfield Model 1, Mark 4 rifles in the pipeline…Royal Tiger is being a royal pain in the ass getting the one I ordered on December 20th to me… it’s irritating. And not left eyed… the left hand sling setup is another pain in the ass. It’s ‘how it came’ so to speak.

  5. Just spit ballin’, IF, “the airplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport” that would be for the long runway. “Then air traffic controllers asked the arriving commercial if it could land on runway 33”. Which they were diverted to. Thus according to the map of the flight paths and runway location, immediately closed the time and distances between them. Did ANYONE warn the Blackhawk of the change in airplane direction? I doubt it. Speed and closing distance. Fast change kills.

  6. Lovely result – I’ll have to check the Aluma-Hide out.
Hopefully the headspace is good and the barrel is still in decent condition. Thanks for the pictures and story. Coelacanth
