My Sophomore year in High School.
When the Challenger went UP and became scattered pieces-parts. The reason I’m so intimately aware of it was I was from New Hampshire. It was a really big deal that Christa McAuliffe was the “Teacher in Space”. To the point that for back then, there were TVs broadcasting the entirety of the launch from start to ignominious finish alllll over good ole Winnacunnet High School… (be me: Class of 1988, same as that lesbian thundercunt current People’s Socialist Republic of Taxachusetts ‘Governor’ Maura Healy, but you won’t find THAT in her ‘of-fish-al’ biography). “Fish” being the key part of that last bit… mean girl extraordinaire. I wouldn’t piss on her to put her out if she was writhing around on fire at my feet…
Anyways…
So it was like a holiday when Christa went up. Little known nor spoken of fact was her husband was a BIG contributor/contractor in the FedGov, and the ‘fix’ was in… I learned that from MomUnit who’d ALSO put in for it at the time as she too was a 6rth grade teacher from NH. We found out later that the fix was in, and essentially McAuliffe’s husband sent her to her death unknowingly… gotta sorta hate it for the guy airight?
So yeah… It was like a holiday in school… all classes wandering around, watching and such whatnot… all the way up until the grand Ka-Boomy-BOOM!
I look back now at MY reaction versus my classmates.
THEY reacted like the future NPCs and drones that they were.
Stunned.
Speechless.
Horrified.
All the ‘normal’ reactions (in theory).
My reaction?
Hysterical Laughter.
Even back then, I had an extreme sense of absurdity. Meaning that to me? The entire concept was just perfect for such a disaster to unfold.

Only to see it dashed on the ‘rocks of reality’ if you will.
To be honest, maybe I was cracked… leastways when they hustled me off to the guidance counselors who tried to square peg me into a round hole… I couldn’t stop laughing though at the utter hilarity of the absurdity of the time…
I mean what the fuck did they expect?
They sent me home with a note to the parental units that I might need professional ‘trauma care’.

I just saw reality through the gimlet eye that I’d developed due to the insincerity and callousness of the school when it came to the utter shitty treatment and bullying I had suffered under for OH so long.

So anyways, that’s MY personal “Challenger” story, as grim as it is… I DO feel bad for them poor fuckers who were on board… little known fact: the folks on the upper decks unfortunately lived thru the explosion. My Best Fren at the time, a southern dude named Dirk had a cousin who was a Coastie Rescue Swimmer… who happened to be one of the guys who was on call that day…
He visited about 6 months after the fact, and I got to meet him.

Seem he and another guy were the ones to dive on the cockpit section. There were two levels… the bottom? Everyone was smooshed to paste by the fuel tank detonating… pushed the floor of the orbitor into the roof, squishing everyone…

Well it seems that they lived… just long enough to die on impact at 200mph plus, or from drowning. Dirk’s cousin didn’t go into details. Poor bastard’s face told me all I needed to know…

So… we lost 3 F-15s in the first week of this shitshow due to a traitorous Iranian Sympathizing Major who shot down those 3 aforementioned aircraft. Now what I find fascinating is that the aircrew photos and videos show after the shoot down in the recovery phase?
No one was wearing US Flags.
In fact NONE of them had any identifying nationality.
EXCEPT
The uniforms themselves?
They were Israeli air crew uniforms.
Got me a hunch that the Kuwaiti Major decided it was one thing for the US to launch strikes on Iran out of Kuwait, but was ANOTHER entirely different kettle of gevelt fish to allow Izzies to fly out of Kuwait….
Then today?
We lost an F-15, one crewmember recovered
We also lost an A-10… how the fuck that happened is a mindscrambler as an A-10? I mean Jesus Christo!!! Those things are unkillable. I mean on April 7, 2003, Capt. Kim “Killer Chick” (great callsign BTW!!!) Campbell took a direct hit from an Iraqi ADA missile… She landed the A-10 after what should have been a catastrophic incident:

She went to ‘manual’ on the plane to bring it home, because her Hydraulics were blown the fuck out. She literally muscled that pig back to base, and landed. The damage got totaled after: “After landing, ground crews discovered that her A-10 had sustained damage to one engine and to the redundant hydraulic systems, disabling the flight controls, landing gear and brakes, and horizontal stabilizer. A detailed inspection revealed hundreds of holes from extensive flak damage to the airframe, and that large sections of the stabilizer and hydraulic controls were missing.”

No so good… If that was a recovery bird, it had a crew of 5 plus depending on mission… meaning it probably had a Pilot, Copilot, Crew Chief, Door Gunner and Medic/Air Rescue Recovery/Pararescue dude… Possibly 5+ KIA ‘cos a Blackhawk on fire, falling from the sky?
It used to be my worst nightmare to get hit, at height on a “Crash-Hawk” There ain’t no walking away from that sort of shit…

Interesting back story on McAuliffe, and how she got the gig. I vaguely remember there being some sort of “competition” to get the coveted spot, and never really had much info on how she was selected. I guess there is some kind of especially bitchy karma in the fact that her well connected husband apparently pulled strings, wanting to bask in the bragging rights of the first civilian in space. That is pretty fucked up, really. But fate has a way of evening scores sometimes, in the most spectacular, kick you in the scrote from a running start with a size 14 steel toe sort of way. I have to imagine that of all the motherfucker gut punches anyone ever had to live down, that was the motherfuckest; if he ever managed to do so.
I was in 6th grade at the time, and having seen numerous previous shuttle launches, I knew immediately on seeing the way it went two different directions in highly irregular fashion that it, and likely everyone in board, was immediately toast. I do kind of feel bad for the crew, but then they were active participants in a mission run by a government that wasn’t trustworthy even then (though they likely never even conceived such a thought, much less admitted as much to themselves).
This was an outfit (FEDGOV in general, and NASA specifically, along with the various contractors involved) that cut corners, covered up deficiencies, and was more concerned with image and bad PR for scrubbing a particularly momentous launch (first teacher in space, yada yada) than they were with the safety of the crew and craft. Thing is, the big shits knew (as it all came out in the end) they were fucking around by being way outside proper launch parameters, they were warned strongly of the likely outcome, and said fuckit, we’re going for it anyway because we don’t want to deal with bitching about more delays, or a disappointed public. Heh, well they kinda struck out on both counts there, didn’t they?
You’re absolutely right that with all the hype and promotion of the thing, they had tempted fate to give them all a black eye and a torn sphincter, in the very worst way possible. My immediate reaction wasn’t as dark as yours, as I recounted elsewhere the other day how after more than an hour of watching the same 60 seconds of video the networks had over and over again, I asked if there was a Flintstones marathon or something else we could watch, if we were going to keep the TV on.
That got me a trip to the principal. I informed her that watching the same loop of launch, blow up, spectators gawking confusedly, and the reporters running their mouth with pure conjecture (ok, maybe not in those exact words since I was just a sixth grader, but that was the basic idea) because they knew nothing useful (yet), was not a good use of classroom time. Surprisingly, she agreed with that much, and had the TV removed from the room. She still advised me that I had an attitude problem, and was acting rudely and insensitively (as if I gave a fraction of a fuck about that). At least she didn’t call me Mr. Potato Head.
As to the dearth of honest info out of Iran about….really anything, that comes as no surprise. Thing is, back in my youth, at least our propaganda seemed like a more highly refined art, than say Pravda, for example. But these days, it’s strictly amateur hour, bush league shite. I see right through it, anyway. My fraternal grandfather had a great expression: “he talks like a man with a paper asshole.” Right about now, that does well at describing Trump and his increasingly incoherent push-pull self contradicting statements over the last month concerning Iran.
Thing is, govt jerkoffs at some level have to know this “war” is immensely unpopular with the public at large, and so they have mucho incentive to cover up casualties, as well as any other related bad news. As usual, the soldiers who took an oath to put their asses on the line get shat upon, that’s really nothing new. It’s just a dirty little secret no one really likes to acknowledge. It is kind of funny how the media is complicit into the cover up this time; remember Cindy Sheahan, and how Nightline signed off (after a stern look from Ted Koppel) for weeks with a scroll of the reported dead troops from Desert Storm? Actually, it would have been a later operation than Desert Storm, but I distinctly remember that shit, being hung around the president’s neck nightly like a kryptonite necklace on Superman.
And I’m not saying it was wrong to publicly acknowledge troops that made the ultimate sacrifice, although it was quite obviously done to undermine the whole operation and stoke public discontent, certainly not to give the deceased their proper recognition. These are leftists we are talking about, after all. This time around, you can’t even hear the crickets snoring, the little bitches are straight up doing the mission impossible thing, and disavowing all knowledge of their existence. Just another example of how the government is well and truly fucked, having spent all it’s legitimacy and good will by pissing in our faces (for decades) and telling us it’s holy water.

I was doing E-4 Mafia stuff when the Challenger went up – watching it live in the barracks in a buddy’s room that day. I think I might have been a PFC again, though. Happened a few times and I wasn’t even a dope fiend. I just liked to fight – you know, like I was trained to do? Bastards. “Here, you are a trained warfighter and won’t take shit off anyone, but if you get into a fight, we’ll bust your ass! Fuggin’ MP had it coming. He shouldn’t have hit my buddy with his stick for no reason. At least the CO was cool and hit me with a Company Grade. Couldn’t get me with a Battalion Grade like the division commander recommended after the fact – double jeopardy and all that stuff.
Saw Bracken posted a short vid of a missile hitting that A10. Wasn’t anything left.
As for the other stuff? Never talk about Fight Club.
The A-10 is indeed a tough aircraft indeed.
But despite the recent events, the F-15 is no slouch either. There is a very well documented case of an F-15 that was in a mid-air collision that had its complete right wing torn off yet it still flew home and landed. The flight controls and systems of that aircraft are incredible.
That being said, no aircraft is unkillable. They all have their weaknesses.
Also, it often comes down to the quality and experience of the crew members flying the aircraft. I personally know of one pilot who jumped out of a perfectly good F-15E when a SAM detonated close by but didn’t actually hit the aircraft. I also have a friend who saved a dying F-4 Phantom that he absolutely should have bailed out of. If departed controlled flight five times during the flight, the last time just over the runway during landing.
I obviously wasn’t there for those F-15s that were shot down over Kuwait. But my first reaction to watching the videos were that the airframes looked reasonably intact & controllable after being hit and that the aircrew got out of them pretty quickly. I have a fair amount of time flying the F-15E and it didn’t look like a “bailout immediately” situation to me. But then again we’ll likely never hear the true story of what happened.

I have been there, but it’s been a looong time. So everyone that I knew and worked with are also retired. I still miss those days.
In the follow on career I flew with someone who had just retired from there. He had interesting things to says about weapon systems and their follow-on maintenance. This were during the Biden days when the military was languishing away. Some of the things mentioned were scary bad.
The one F15 hit I saw looked like it lost both engines which is no bueno. I can see the pilot bailing in that circumstance.
That said, if it was Izzy pilot then who knows.

I saw some videos, but they were pretty grainy. Yes, I did see fire coming from some of them, but there’s no way from those video to declare that they “lost” the engines. Unless the aircraft is coming apart around you there are several things to analyze before jumping out:
• Is the aircraft controllable? No – then jump out. Yes – then you have time to think.
• Are the engines still running? Burning engines still produce thrust and hydraulic pressure. Fires can sometimes be extinguished.
• If the engines aren’t still running, are they still windmilling and therefore producing hydraulic power?
• How close were they to the base they were going to?
• Are we still being threatened by the douche nozzle who still shot us?
All these and many more questions need to be considered before punching out. Maybe they had obvious signs that the aircraft were coming apart. Maybe they were really fast thinkers. Don’t know. But they sure hopped out of those aircraft pretty darn quick. Just saying.

I was wondering in another discussion about the A-10 if there might be sabotage going on, but someone else made a pretty good case for fuel contamination, I figure there is no reason the two must be mutually exclusive. I had thought the 5-15 crews bailed out pretty quick too, though I don’t fault them for that, they looked fairly low and the ground comes up pretty quick sometimes.

The A-10 has a legacy too — the P-47 D Thunderbolt. Airframes intended to absorb various ordnance or shrapnel and still remain airworthy. I saw the A-10 fly at an airshow years ago and it whispered loudly in a low pass over the field. Really cool aircraft.
Another favorite was the F-105 Thunderchief. The “Thud” really awesome airplane but suffered heavy losses over North Vietnam. Probably because there were so many sorties … even the dipshits operating the AA could hit them.

The German WW2 JU-87 tankbuster ace Hans Ulrich Rudel was consulted (before his death in 1982) by the USAF on the finer points of what he would want in a perfect aircraft for tank busting. They actually wanted real input from an expert on the subject.

I recall the Stukas used sirens mounted underneath which screamed in a dive. Those pilots must have loved the shit out of their jobs. That was a cool aircraft. I think Erich Hartmann flew the Bf-109 if I recall. Also an amazing airplane for it’s mission.

About 12 years later after the Challenger blowup I visited the Thiokol plant in Utah and saw the boosters being assembled. What was really interesting was one of the boosters was on the test pad being readied for a test firing. Those boosters were long. Went to the hill behind the boosters and started looking at the rocks, they were glass. Cool visit. The plant was on the road to where the east and west railroads connected, the transcontinental railroad.
I was taking a calculus test in college when the Challenger went kablooey, so saw the replay. My comment to a friend was a lot of people effed up for this to happen, shrugged my shoulders, and moved on. Nothing I could do, didn’t know any of the people involved, just prayed for their families is all I could do.
I was in high school chemistry class when they had us all watching the launch. It exploded and I yelled out “Did you guys see all them fucking passports floating to the ground!?” They all looked at me like I was crazy.
When everyone was distracted by the TV I later learned my good friend Carl stole a bottle of mercury. He later, to my disbelief, dumped half the bottle in the school hallway during class change. I still don’t know why he did that. And I don’t know what he did with the other half of the bottle.

Fuuuuck. This is the most perfect summation – and stinging indictment – of what “America” has become in my lifetime that I think I’ve ever read. I can only add that for me personally, the blackpilling that came from recognizing all of this – even if only obliquely – in my early 2o’s (circa mid 1990’s) put my life on a trajectory where I didn’t “man up and marry that slut” and have the “one and done designer kid”. So, I avoided the pain and destruction of (what would’ve quite likely been) a failed marriage, the lifelong alienation of said kid, and decimation of my future finances that I would’ve faced, if I’d chosen to play the game anyway. I know there are plenty of readers and commenters here who did exactly that, and have the scars to prove it.

My gut says the likely course of events is the ad hoc emergence of groups of people regionally – some will be more capable than others – who will have the vision, and force to back it up, to start rebuilding. I highly doubt anything that resembles nascent America circa 1776, that was a historical aberration that has almost no analog in recorded history. Most people know about the sailors stuck in USS Oklahoma’s Hull and that many were rescued, many others were killed by the well meaning rescue attempts when the torches cutting through the hull steel consumed the remaining oxygen in some of the pockets. Even less well known was a couple of guys alive inside partially sunken USS California who hammered on the hull for a week or so. There was no way to rescue them without killing them and the workers had to ignore the constant hammering until it eventually stopped. Families were told they died on the day of the attack.
The challenger disaster was predicted in close detail several years before it happened in a 1980 magazine article. It has been a while since I read through it but it was a damning indictment of NASA culture that led to the accident.

As I read through these comments, a question arises in my mind. With so many individuals, and not just here mind you, wishing for a destruction of the current governing paradigm, where are the individuals of conscience that will rise up and replace said paradigm? Do they even exist? I don’t know, I’m just asking.
A valid question. I foresee two issues.
1. Nearly anyone who wants to run shit in the context of a governmental entity (all the way down to a lowly HOA) is likely to either be an outright asshole, or will end up getting drunk on power and being corrupted once they get in a place of authority for any length of time. I don’t really see a solution to this other than extreme public vigilance, built in term limits right from the get to, and some way of exacting severe punishment (outside of governmental system controls) of those who manage to get in and fuck up bigly. Of course, this goes straight to the quality of the populace, which has been lowered so far as to be an abomination.
Darwin postulated survival of the fittest. I doubt he envisioned a society so inverted by imbued guilt, race cucking, and fake ass virtue snivelling for social clout, that many of the most capable would spend an overwhelming amount of time and resources to raise up the shit dregs of the population at large, instead of seeking to go on improving their lot by seeing to their own best interests (which necessitates the punishment and elimination of the shit dregs). Or the mass, intentional importation of shit dregs into previously first world countries. With that said, we really do need a massive Malthusian die off (or some other large scale event that eliminates untold scores of idiots and their willing boosters, who will work tirelessly to undercut the rest of us as long as they – and their pet divershitty – continue to exist in quantity anywhere they can exert influence over policy and attitudes.
2. Any establishment of government also needs to be very decentralized, so as to slow the consolidation of powder to a group of assholes working together in one place. Note that I said slow, not eliminate, because I don’t believe the letter is actually possible. And again, some exogenous mechanism for punishing corruption has to be figured out and established for dealing with corruption as soon as is noticed, or we just end up with shitfuckery like the DOJ under Blondi that gets exactly nothing at all done but to flush their annual budgets down a giant toilet with zero accountability.
No system will ever willingly punish itself, nor will it recognize as legitimate any outside authority not it’s own. Therefore, it seems to me that we just need citizen hit squads to target bad actors quietly, swiftly and with no given explanation. Disappearing these asshole wankers eliminates the immediate problems they cause, and also inculcates enough fear into those who remain, that maybe they keep their noses clean while doing the job. Deterrent value just be established and shown to be deadly serious. Right now, we have no such thing.
Government should be kept small – very small – and if that could somehow be achieved, the number of people of good character needed to run it would this be minimized. At it’s current scale, there is simply no possible way we can find enough high quality, willing individuals to take on the job. I certainly wouldn’t do it, and I’m not certain I’m so far beyond reproach that I even should, were I willing. And without a way to exclude so much of the human garbage that now lives in the FUSA from getting government positions (whether elected, appointed or hired) there can be no chance at any improvement whatsoever. The present government is nothing more than a jobs program for fuckups and grifters.

I was in charge of an electronic repair shop in the Army, and my shop foreman gave me the news. And then it was non-stop bombardment in the media making martyrs of the whole crew, 24/7. The previous December, a military flight crashed in Goose Bay, Labrador, and it got scarce mention. That flight was bringing home married service members early for Christmas to be with their families. Nobody survived.
