Having seen and lived on the US side of Cuba, I think I have a itty-bitty bit of insight. Let me lay it out for you.
Number One was ‘back in the day’, i.e “The Cuban Missile Crisis” and such stupidity, we had Russia, i.e. THE USSR, the Big Bad Bear promising ‘protection’ against any more shit we might pull, backed by Nuclear Weapons, against Cuba and Fidel.
The overwhelming attitude during the Cold War was pretty much ‘don’t go too far!’ and ‘live and let live’ with the idea that eventually Cuba would fall apart under sanctions and all the ‘usual Jewish bullshit’ that we’re so familiar with would happen, we’d eventually be invited in as Saviors.
Problem is, it didn’t work out that way.
Now… we have to cut to twenty/thirty years later.
Cuba used to be a vacation paradise only 90 miles from Miami
After Fidel took over in 1962, all bets were off.

When I was there in 2011-12 (several times) the yacht got permission to stop and anchor in several spots. Went from Marina Hemingway to Varadero (brand new marina and 4 story condos for foreigners) then thru the islands SE of that. Had to check in with the Cuban CG at each stop (with mucho paperwork for the captain) to assure the Cubans we were following our travel plan. The area was pristine, I can see why so many Europeans and Canadians go there. If you wanted to fish you had to have a local guide and you weren’t coming back empty handed.

If you have some thoughts on sea mobility, survival, evasion, or cheap living, then I can only add to what Kafiroon has said. A flashy boat can attract unwanted attention even in normal times and normal places. A boat like this has enormous fuel costs to move it anywhere and the range is going to be limited by the fuel capacity and your wallet. It clearly cannot be moved by the wind, which is a non starter for me. A motor sailor would solve those types of problems for you if a bug out boat is what you were thinking. The security problems remain regardless. The AIS ship tracking data for the Eastern Med this fine morning will not show the FORD CBG underway, but it does show a stream of private Kike sailing yachts all headed to Cypress. Not a single flybridge cruiser to be seen.

What caught my eye were the Norinco AKs. They have not been sold in the US in a long time…some sort of tiff between Bush 1 and China? Its a shame, they made an M-14 clone that was rugged and super cheap. It is, or was, still available in Canada before they started down the confiscation trail. I wonder if those Norinco AKs were pawn shop specials? Had a Norinco Tokarev in 9mm, great {cheap} pistol. Accurate enough for purpose and can be used as a hammer in a pinch. I had a German co-worker who planned a family vacation in Cuba (did not go, ended up going to FL instead). She said a lot of Euros go there because it is cheaper than anywhere else. I watched a few travel YouTubes about Havana and other places in Cuba, looked pretty crappy.

I did business with people in Hialeah many years ago. Specifically offset printing. The (Cuban) guys I worked with were fucking spot on in every detail. And some of the most friendly, down to earth people you could imagine. And their food is absolutely delicious. I have preferred very strong coffee ever since. 😀
I never understood why Cuba wasn’t made a state right about when Hawaii and Alaska were. Alaska I can understand — Hawaii? No. Cuba would have been much preferable IMHO. Your analysis of the Caribbean was very good.

Fuel burn is ferocious. I’ve been ou on a custom 52’ sport fisherman out of Lewes a few times, lo these many years ago. Twin MAN diesels with just a few ponies less than that Hatteras. Heading out we were passing everything else out there like they were standing still, and she rode a 5’ swell like an old Caddy or Lincoln. Owner said we were doing 43 knots. Asked him what the fuel burn was. 110 gallons per hour. This was right after diesel had gone up from 95 cents to 3.50 per gallon. Not unusual to have a $2500 fill up at the fuel dock.
