Believe it or not; During the 1994 WESTPAC we had a mini gastrointestinal “epidemic” aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. The Captain ordered “watches” (PO2 & PO1/E5 & E6) posted in each head to ensure EVERY sailor washed his hands after using the urinal/shitter and CPOs (E7) posted in chow lines to check the “personal hygiene” of the crew. This policy lasted a few weeks. I was a CPO at the time and we were ordered to turn away crew wearing dirty coveralls or flight deck greens.
Of course he claimed that it wasn’t a foodborne illness even though all of our “fresh” fruits and vegetables were coming from local (South Korean) sources. The illness went away after we left the area.
Marines have always served on our big ships. The sailors are just proving to the highers that you can’t just shit on people and walk away.
Maybe we should mind our own business and not fuck around in someone else’s business. Would need Marines on ships policing the shitters and would have troops plugging the shitters up.

I can’t speak from personal experience about how the USS Gerald R Ford’s Vacuum Collection Holding Tank system works, as I have never been on one of those, but I do know they did NOT use the old salt water flush system that the ten Nimitz class used. That VCHT system is one of the many brand spanking new systems the Ford class has had persistent issues with since it was built. I was stationed on 5 carriers over my 20 years: Kitty Hawk, George Washington, Dwight D Eisenhower, and John C Stennis, and none of them ever had any real issues flushing stuff down the toilets AFAIK. They did sometimes had issues with “reverse flow”, if you know what I mean, where the shitters would spew crap in reverse.

On the human level, we have seen the incompetence of these current day Navy crews displayed over and over again in recent years. There was a DEI led collision in the Caribees just a week or 2 ago. The Bonhomme Richard fire that went on for a week and damn near burned the ship to the waterline is a clear indication that these kids suck at damage control and are going to burn or drown by the thousands when one of these ships gets hit. There was plenty of incompetence in the 1967 Forrestal fire too, and that lead directly to the high death toll. But that was a different Navy and the crew ultimately saved the ship.
To be fair: the Bonhomme Richard was sabotage and the man in question is in prison for it. Also the ship was in port and under maintenance – the regular crew wasn’t on board.
Fair point, but despite being in a yard period and not fully staffed as on deployment there was a substantial portion of the crew aboard throughout. The being in port part only adds to the shame of it all. The yard boss and the ship’s officers failed to act decisively in the crisis and expected the other party to take the lead in fighting the fire. There is no excuse for that in a multi day event with all the resources required available at hand and no distractions of being underway to take into account.
My kid was the duty officer aboard their ship when the BR started burning. Their ship was in for it’s half life refurbishment, as well. They told me they immediately ordered a security team to their ship in case it was some kind of coordinated attack. Got them a pat on the back from the CO for being proactive. The rest of the crew was made available to go fight the fire on BR, but it was such a cluster, nobody could coordinate anything, so it wound up burning. It didn’t have to.

In WW2, the German navy never left port. The navy was full of ratings with training and skills that transfer straight over to private shipping, 180 from the draftees in the trenches.
When the generals knew the war was lost, they sent orders to the fleet to sortee out and just see how many British ships they could sink before they were all sunk, since they knew whatever treaty wouldn’t let them keep the ships.
The orders never left the radio rooms. The radiomen called the chiefs, not the admirals. The entire navy mutinied before command even knew they had orders. No one was taking a suicide mission.
That’s a great historical anecdote. And isn’t it interesting how incidents like that never get any mainstream exposure. There is certainly a selection bias at play, when it comes to the type of individual who enlists in an all volunteer force of a country as hopelessly screwed up as circa 2026 America. I’m sure there are still good folks who go in out of a sense of duty and patriotism.
That said, it has become just another government jobs program for people who have limited – or no other – options for a paycheck. Then there are those with ulterior motives, like gang and cartel members who use it to get trained up and network for “future plans”.
U-boats weren’t part of the Navy?
That was the German High Seas Fleet in World War 1. They won a close contest at the Battle of Jutland in 1916 by virtue of sinking more British ships, but retreated back to base and did not contest the North Sea again for the rest of the war. That mutiny came in 1918.
The WW2 German surface navy mostly died at sea in single ship actions against squadrons of enemy ships. As the war went on those sailors were either destined to become replacement crew for the U-Boats or were pressed into service with Luftwaffe ground crew as infantry replacements at the front. There were not enough surface combatants left in working order in 1945 for a Yamato style suicide mission even if they wanted one. The WW2 German military would certainly surrender if conditions were appropriate, but there is no documented case of widespread mutiny or refusal to fight as happened in 1918.

I suspect that if things go poorly in spectacular fashion it will mean the end of large surface combatants, the end of the American Naval tradition *, and the end of the American Empire. If we are lucky it will also mean the end of Israeli influence over our lives and institutions.
* A winning naval tradition such as the Brits used to have is not something that just happens if you build a lot of warships. It has to be built upon audacity, duty, competence, and a good measure of success delivered by real fighting sailors over time. Case in point is the German High Seas Fleet of WW1 that was the subject of Phelps’s mutiny post above. The Kaiser built a modern dreadnought fleet before that war to challenge Britain. Germany was always a land power and had never done much fighting at sea if any at all. This fleet turned out to be large enough and well built. The German gunnery at the Battle of Jutland and the Dogger Bank battles was superior to the Royal Navy and if they stayed in the Jutland fight they would have secured control of the North Sea. The German Admiral shied away out of excessive caution and would not risk his fleet again for the rest of the war. That is what happens when you do not have a winning naval tradition. The Chinese would do well to take note. Of course the USN is a pale shadow of its former self, so China could still end up making the mistake of building an expensive and obsolete carrier centric navy like ours and come away with a win.

When I came aboard Naval Station Long Beach in ’86, the first thing I noticed when doing Civil Engineering surveys was how much the swabbies could purposely f…k stuff up. Seems nothing has changed. In 1969 I had four choices: Enlist, get drafted, flee to Canada or go to prison. I drank the purple Kool-Aid and enlisted.
By the time I started Infantry OCS at Benning’s School for Boys, Nixon was winding down the war because Amerika was close to insurrection. I ended up getting cashiered along with nine hundred other candidates and spent the remainder of my tour as a SP4 MP at Fort Hood. However, still being stupid, I went back as an active Army Reservist in 1979. By then, the Wimmen and Beta Males were running things. After watching two females go from E-4 to WO1 on their backs (!) I exited stage left. I have spent the remainder of my time during my second career as a schoolteacher exhorting the clueless young about the dangers and futility of service with .mil. Sometimes, I have been successful.

That’s a valid question, and I suspect much such behavior is to “fuck Trump”, but functionally, whatever the underlying basis for these incidents of apparent sabotage is, it means they are not truly battle ready, and therefore are far more likely to get fucked up badly in a real combat situation.
And perhaps that is just what needs to happen, to break the mindset of TPTB of always wanting to jump into some military battle, just because they believe they can “win” (for whatever their definition of “winning” might be). If the FUSA suffers a major defeat on the world stage, and a carrier with overpriced, underperforming systems and weapons gets junked as a result, maybe the assholes running things will stop strutting around like they have 10′ long dicks, with the delusion that they can take down anyone. Because, fundamentally, the notion that they are invincible via force projection by the military is what keeps getting them into stupid shit that ends poorly.
Considering that the FUSA hasn’t booked a decisive military victory since WWII (and even that doesn’t look so cut and dried in retrospect, given where both the US and Europe have ended up 80 years later) there has been a lot of blood and treasure [mis]spent on marginal outcomes (Korea and Iraq) to outright disasters (Vietnam and Afghanistan), and they still haven’t learned to stop fucking around in these international misadventures. The Army had worked out how many toilets to have for set number of men, Navy has never been able to figure it out, just stuff some where there is some space. 600 toilets for how many Crew 4500-5000 seems low. and apparently ,it is rather easy to screw up the vacuum system. BTW I saw two-three Sans blown inboard on my subs and a tampon in grinder pump with all male crew.

There is the desired standard of conduct (competent, compliant troops that follow orders) and then there is the reality of human behavior (shit heads who joined because they had no other options, or ulterior motives like sabotage from the inside). Yes, those who volunteer are expected by the brass to do the job. But as no battle plan survives first contact with the enemy, neither does ones expectations of conduct comport with observable reality when running a “diverse” crew whose loyalties may be in question. And that is exactly what we now have.
Since the military has been turned into a jobs program, complete with lowered standards allowing in a lot of people who shouldn’t be serving, there is real risk of unanticipated consequences. So, I’m not necessarily encouraging or saying there should be mass disobedience, but I am saying that in the current reality, we can pretty well expect it will happen.
And one still needs to account for the fact that the government itself has been compromised, which means orders may be given for the express purpose of damaging the US, it’s military and it’s best interests as a nation. What is to be done about that? Follow the orders regardless, when they are issued by traitors? A very troubling question, indeed.
