Greetings and Salutations!
I wasn’t in the mood to write last night. Bit down and BAM! A right rear molar shattered. One that I had just had fixed not even a year ago. I had a old amalgam cavity replaced (not a root canal) and dunno?
I went to ‘finish off’ an after dinner mint (peppermint lifesaver) and towards the end… when it’d melted down juuuust about nothing… it shouldn’t have been particularly overly hard, and I just bit down and OOF! I felt the toofus just collapse.
Crap.
I ended up spitting out the remaining pieces/parts of the mint and the now-detonated toofus…
Currently, right now it doesn’t hurt, but this’s means it’s gonna be ANOTHER extraction as even WITH my dental plan, I can’t afford the deductible, and a yank/pull is only $100. THAT I can cover. At this rate I’m going to be eligible to joint the West Virginia Kissin’ Cuzzins’ Club… (eligibility determined by the number of remaining natural teeth) And then after it’s pulled? Well let’s just say the diet is going to be going very well over the next week or so…
Needless to say, I’ve only had yogurt to eat today… I’m not sure just how much ‘hurt’ is going to happen from this shitshow. I’ll be sticking to my mush until I can get an appointment with the Fang-Doc.
So More Later-Later
Big Country

Thanks to massive amounts of steroids, my teeth have the bad habit of exploding . I had one break, went to get it pulled. Only dentist that could get me in within 3 weeks was a woman in the ghetto, she was white cheap rent I guess. She had a little girl in there as an intern/student dentist. Never did get my mouth numb, until the drive home when it all hit. Lil thing pulled twisted, yanked. I thought she was gonna climb up on my chest and brace her foot. I am used to male dentists with wrists like gorillas. This lil girl could not get this tooth out. Ended up drilling and drilling. I was spitting tooth fragments for another two weeks and ate nothing but peanut butter and jello for the whole damn time.
got to watch the steroids. you end up with AVN in your hips and shoulders. you have any shoulder or hip pain ? that might be the reason. back doing MRIs in the late 90’s we used to do /scan a lot of Temple football players for shoulder pain and found AVN on them. due to steroid use.
and if you ever had a army dentist work on your teeth, well. I don’t know where they get them, but I never seen a good one. most of the time they hollow out your tooth and fill it with that shit metal.
and at the VA , the same thing. lots of Vets with massive amounts of metal in their teeth.
God knows they fucked up my teeth while I was in.
What fucked me was when I was a kid, about 9-10 years old, we had a dentist in town who when I got my ‘permanent chompers’ finally in, the first “big boy” exam the fucker told MomUnit and Now-DeadDad that I had 12 cavities (despite me religiously brushing my fangs… “They call me Yuckmouth, ‘cos I don’t brush…” ‘member that?).
I ended up being tortured over a period of weeks… The folks thought I was weak when I was screaming my ass off… IRL the fucker (it turns out) was NOT using Novocain and was running a fucking scam!!!! ($50 per filling in the mid to late 70s) When the news broke, and they went to arrest him and all the lawsuits started ginning up, he ate his .38. I hope the fucker is burning in Hell for that shit…
B/C of this, allll my rear molars are severely fucked up and why I have trust issues.
Same shit happened to me, I think in my whole life going to good dentists I’ve had 2 or 3 cavities. But this one SOB that my Dad had me go to as a teenager put in like 10 fillings in 6 months !!
Scam SOB, I hope his teeth rot out !
Anyway, he did a shit job and I had them all replaced by a really good dentist 20 years ago. Problem is that filling them weakens the tooth and over the decades chomping causes them to crack until one day BANG. What’s been happening to me is the root cracks then all you can do is pull it. I’m about your age and I’ve lost 4 of my molars in the last 3 years and 1 more is coming out next month.
Find out what they want for an implant, you could buy a decent used car for what they want for 1 tooth !! As I told my dentist, I’m eating ok with the teeth I have and when I have trouble when I’m older, I’ll get a partial denture if I need to.
If a front tooth has to come out, I’ll go down to Mexico and get an implant for 1/4 of what they charge in the US. My wife & I agree that I dont want to look like a Jack o Lantern. ☺️
Sorry dude, I know how much a buster molar hurts and it’s a SOB to get pulled out.
you will never guess what they use to hold the implant in with.
yup. Portland cement. yes , the same stuff you use to make concrete with.
a small tube of it is like 25 bucks years ago. weird part is at Home depot, you can buy a 94 pound bag of it for under 10 bucks. no shit. really
I found this out talking to the good dentist I know.
Be careful of 3rd world dentistry
I’ve had a chance to see the outcome of som ok stuff…
And a fair number of real problems
back in West Berlin, we/they had a Brit dentist. what a fucktard he was ! had to get 2 wisdom teeth pulled /cut out. SOB had me in that chair for close to 3 hours with little to no pain meds.
got back to the barracks and TOP took one look at me and the blood running out of my mouth
went down to the medics and got a shot of the good stuff. YES ! MORPHINE is great stuff !!!!
told another guy to watch my ass as I drifted off to sleep. I had to stay on my side.
I think the bastard/dentist gave me like 2 or 4 pills for the pain. guess what they where too
tylenol OTC shit. thank God it was Friday and I spent the weekend drinking enough till it didn’t hurt anymore. so, yeah I have major trust issues about dentists. I have known a few great ones though. had about 2/3 of my upper jaw removed due to some impact/infection shit
years ago. he was great. in and out inside of 2 hours. little to no bleeding and very little pain.
problem was he was close to 70 years old and about to retire.
haven’t found anyone even close to his skill level. and the other guy is about too now and on the other side of the state !
My steroid use was due to a neuro condition to reduce inflammation. A gram a day for 5 days four times a year for 10 years. Steroids suck the calcium from your body, I lost two inches in height from them too. I know because I had my height taken for a medical study and was 6′. Now I am 5’10”.
When I was a kid maybe around 12 I went to our dentist so he could remove this tooth growing in the front of my mouth. It was a healthy tooth but it was growing in wrong and causing problems for my other teeth.
So I’m there and he’s working on it and he used laughing gas. So I’m floating around the room like a balloon. So at one point he grabs what to me looked to be ordinary run of the mill pliers. He starts pulling at that tooth.
Eventually he was on top of me in that chair with his knee against my chest just like a cartoon. Eventually he yanked that tooth out of my skull.
Imagine a man yanking your tooth out like that and you have no ill will towards him. He did a good job and it never even hurt. He was an old white dentist that probably yanked a million teeth out in his lifetime.
Just like you wants a middle aged white male as your pilot you also want an old white male as your dentist.
Grate your carrots and other hard veggies, use an nutribullet for grinding nuts and such and stop eating hard candy.
Sounds like some excitement. I hope I don’t out live some of the stuff that has been done to my teeth. Makes me wonder how we survived as a species before we had dentists.
We died before they had a chance to give us trouble because we didn’t have so many sugary foods/drinks to destroy them…
Broke rear molar three weeks ago on a baloney sandwich!. Dentist saw me , gave me antibiotics for a week before he could pull it .
That’s where I’m at right now. Started the antibiotics yesterday, will go to the oral surgeon next week to get it yanked. He said the molar is split in half.
I’ve got two like that. The molar in back was most annoying because there were sharp edges on it. I just left them. The one in back I got with some 220 grit sand paper and a nigger-rigged home made dental file. Took the sharp edges off. If they ever piss me off I’ll just come over to your place with a bottle of Cardhu for pain killers and we’ll do it with the pliers.
I’m 5 years on them with no problems so far though.
I have a gear puller and a hydraulic ram; i’m sure i could yank it for you Filthie.
😊👍
Well, you are on your way to summer teeth. Some are here, some are there and some are gone.
That’s a good ‘un!
A Steve Inman fan……?????
If it starts to bother ya go to walgreens/wally world and look for the store brand dual action pain reliever – it’s a max dose of acetominephin and ibuprofen. Almost as good as the old tylenol with codeine for tooth pain.
Ibuprofen 600 mg + Acetaminophen 500 mg = every 5 hrs for severe (tooth) pain.
Got that from my dentist for my backcountry trips.
800 mg Ibuprofen every 8 hours in theory. In reality, cover it with Naproxen every 12 to cover the lags due to sleep and other forms of reality. If you have replace parts, e.g. knees, then a general antibiotic like Keflex is prescribed to prevent biofilm buildups. Mouth bacteria is particularly nasty; that is why bare knuckles boxing was a thing. Before antibiotics punching someone in the mouth could be deadly. Breaking a guy’s teeth might feel good, but dying a sepsis because of a jagged tooth and nasty mouth was Not A Good thing. Moral of story is to get any dental emergency dealt with quick, fast and in a hurry.
I’ve always promised myself that if I wind up with dentures then I’m having two sets made.
One regular and one with fangs.
I always thought you couldn’t get cooler.
I was wrong.
Amalgam (silver) is a good material in that it is relatively inexpensive, durable and forgiving to place, since it will set under less than ideal circumstances. It’s also slightly anti-cavity due to the silver content.
However, it adds no strength to the tooth, as it merely fills the hole. You lose structure to the decay, lose more to cutting away the decay and then shaping it to hold the filling. It doesn’t bond to the tooth – just Fills the void. A very modest filling takes away up to 80% of the strength. Molars are particularly prone to fractures because it’s pretty possible to put over a thousand pounds of pressure on back there. Not. Psi – pounds.
Imagine that coming down on something small and hard. PSI heads for 6 figures fast.
And cracks can start and work for years.
Two years ago, I had some ‘turtle’ chocolates in the fridge. Got one out, bit into it, & thought “Wow, these are crunchy!”
Spat it out, and yep! Broke a corner off a tooth. Luckily, it didn’t hurt. Still didn’t several months later, when I got it pulled before it could go really bad.
Best of luck, BCE. Hope you get it before it becomes painful.
I got hit in the mouth with a hatch stanchion accidently, went to dental on the carrier. They wouldn’t touch me as they said I had to much plaque from not brushing and that was the piece I spit out at the time. Fast forward to exit time they said I had dental for 90 days in case something changed. On the 92 day the first one broke. Apparently they acted as a winshield and spider webbed. No insurance, very little money. 50 bucks in 1984 got it pulled. Over the last 40 years I lost them all one or two at a time. If to painful they pulled them, if not I did when they hurt.
Now at 65 not a toofus in the head and I eat what I want with only 2 exceptions. Can’t do Frito’s/Doritos and nuts are impossible. Everything else given time is just food. Gums were off and on sore for a year till they toughened up but the lack of tooth pain after almost 40 years was such a relief that was just an inconvenience.
One thing they don’t tell you . When you get false plates they cover almost 90% of your taste buds, meaning everything tastes like cardboard unless really potent with spices. I am a hell of a cook to tolerate that nonsense, they can keep em. Either way you have some sympathy, tooth pain just plain sucks.
BCE,
If you end up in dental pain from exposed nerves, try Clove Oil. The corner pharmacy usually has it, it is not Rx. Good luck to you. I am an experienced user of dental services. I still have to get an implant from where a former relative hit me and broke a tooth. I learned pre-assault indicators that day the hard way.
I had a back molar that I wore down to almost a funkin’ nub. Cold and sweet shit would hurt like hell. I use to take a flavored BC or Goodies powder and put right on top of that bitch and hold it in place with my tongue until it quit hurting.
Wondering if the nerve died as it hasn’t given me a problem in years.
Back in 2019, Dental work from when I was in the Marines, came back to haunt me. Bad infection hit right before thanksgiving; face swole up like a melon, couldn’t see out my left eye the swelling was so bad. ER visit, and the doc there lanced my gums to let the infection loose. Lots of antibiotics for two weeks with orders to get my ass to a dentist.
Bad news,,, that infection had destroyed the remaining 22 teeth in my head. Gums couldn’t hold them anymore and I was given the option of keep fighting and possibly lose to a heart-attack (yes, oral infections can cause heart issues.) or lose them all and get dentures.
I miss my (real) teeth, but I really do not miss all the fun and games that were happening from shitty repair work. Dentures suck, but they are better than gap toothed smiles and teeth that are ready to crack biting a PB&J sammich.
Get that toofus fixed or pulled ASAP, don’t wait for the infections to hit you.
Get some butter mints. They are soft and melt right away and have great flavor. If you can change your dental insurance; Delta Dental is one of the best out there. I pay $65 a month and they pay for most everything in full. For instance, I had an old filling in a rear molar that just was disintegrating. Instead of pulling it, my dentist has this groovy little machine that measures the offending molar, makes a replica to cap the tooth. It is a beautiful lilac color, then once it is in place, my dentist “cures” it with ultra violet light. It is $225 for this, and I paid $100 as my co-pay. I get my teeth cleaned and x-rayed every 6 months at no cost. I 100% love this plan! If you are in my area ever; Dentist is Peliks and Peliks. Nice Polish guy and his (also dental doctor) wife. Take care of your teeth-it leads directly to your heart. You are on your way to a better life so be around to enjoy this!!
Think the WVKCC require proof of a T to T (tattoo to tooth ratio) of at least 1, so you should be good for a bit
I had been in the Army. My dentist had been in the Navy (as a dental officer), so we had that “funny military stories” thing going while he worked on me. He said once, a senior officer and some POs brought a swabbie in. He said “examine him”. The doc did, and discovered that 5 teeth had to come out. The officer said “get to work, we are from XXX submarine and we are leaving in two days”. “But, but, but…” the doc said. No buts were allowed. He anesthetized the shit out of the guy and pulled them all. He said that was one of his most memorable Navy dental experiences (sure left an impression on me!). In some future comment, I will tell about my dermatologist who had been a Chemical Officer in the Army. Who knew that sniffing CS was good for clearing nasal congestion if you have a cold?
Another thing to keep in mind is that sodas and fruit juices are acidic. And we know what acid does to metals; well, your teeth are not immune to its effects. Add sugar, which feeds bacteria and a cavities result. We all should now that, but it’s easy to forget that the acid in diet sodas does just a much damage, likely more since it’s easy to gulp it on a hot day and Look Mom, No Sugar. So when or if you do consume an acidic product, such as anything citric, make sure and neutralize your mouth’s Ph with things like water or unsweetened iced tea. And it goes without saying to avoid chewing ice and other hard substances. Boiling can be your friend in food prep.
You are not alone…
I feel your coming pain. I had 8 baby teeth pulled when I was 6. And it was down hill from there. I got braces at 9 on the installment plan. Every Saturday went to Ortho guy, my mom would give him $20 and I’d get one brace put on. Took almost a year to get them all in place to put the wires on. Worst one was front upper left, he was hammering it in place and slipped with the chisel and drove it up under my nose, blood everywhere, stuffed the round log cotton absorber sponges and see ya next week. Actually saw stars on that one. (Just had kidney stones in March so I can judge pain levels) 9 additional pulls on adult teeth since then.
Current dentist takes it easy on me as he wanted to know why the choppers were so messed up. He actually cringed when I told him about the no novacaine guy (may he rot in hell). But current Doc does his own self insurance for the cost of a Delta Dental plan. Thing is there are no will we cover this crap, you had an x-ray last year and have to wait another year, if its in your mouth he will fix it.
Good luck Big Guy.
